International students are returning to Australian institutions in droves. Some expect that by 2023, the country will have a record number of international students.
This is potentially excellent news for Australian companies as well as institutions. Part of the Albanese government’s strategy to enhance skills in Australia is to encourage more students to stay in the job when they graduate.
Education Minister Jason Clare recently declared that people with a bachelor’s degree might stay for four years, up from two, to “strengthen the pipeline of skilled labour,” with graduates in healthcare, education, hospitality, and accounting expected to be among them.
However, a mere policy adjustment by the government is insufficient. It is assumed that graduates will be able to find work in the fields in which they have studied. There are four major reasons why higher competent overseas graduates require more than merely a visa extension.
