Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), queried on Twitter if Elon Musk’s $44 billion cash proposal to acquire the U.S. social media platform gave China “a bit of control over the town square.”

Twitter has been prohibited in China, where Musk, the world’s richest man, has significant commercial interests.

Musk, who describes himself as a free speech absolutist and has criticised Twitter’s content filtering policies, agreed to acquire the firm on Monday.

Political activists anticipate that Musk’s ownership of Twitter would result in less moderation and the restoration of previously barred persons, including former US President Donald Trump.
